The village of Lefkara situated in the heart of Cyprus is well known for its beautiful embroideries called the “Lefkaritiko” Lace. The lacy embroideries mimic cutwork, satin stitches and cross stitch combined together. It is even more interesting that the embroideries mimic Hardangersaum which is considered to be traditional Norwegian embroidery. Both embroideries have a striking resemblance, even to the point of using similar motifs and one color threads. It is not surprising however, that the origins of Hardangersaum came from ancient Persia. It is possible that travelers exchanged embroidered goods which were duplicated, and in time gained national recognizance. |
| “Lefkara Lace Crystals” is a simulation of the original Cyprus laces with a Persian twist. As is the case with all my machine embroideries, the eastern touch is added to the Lefkara Lace designs. The designs are all one color, however, stitch simulation may show several color stops. Almost like Lefkaritiko and Hardangersaum, portions of the Lefkara lace designs are cut away with the edges trimmed in satin stitches. The designs have deliberate places created for embellishing with Swaroski crystals. This is an option and does not need to be applied. The designs can be stitched out on Even Weave, Aida or duck cloth to give the impression of the original Lefkaritiko and Hardangersaum. Satin stitches and cross stitches are used to create the designs with extra padding underneath the satin stitches to give them a raised effect. The designs are of a low density and extremely versatile to be used on wearable and home décor items. The 4x4 and the 5x7 hoop is used for the designs. Special basting stitches are provided for all the designs to enable the creation of much larger embroideries.
