| The lace doily we will be making measures 5 1/2" square. The freestanding lace design can be downloaded at the bottom of the page. We will need to stitch out nine motifs. A 4x4 hoop is required. |
1. Hoop water soluble stabilizer. Make sure that it is taut and not wrinkled or loose. "

2. Stitch out nine Kanta Lace motifs.
Do not wash away the stabilizer yet. Trim around each of the motifs so at least half an inch of the stabilizer is still there.
I used white thread to make my sample doily but any color thread to match decor of your house can be used.
3. We are going to need that little bit of stabilizer to be able to hold the motifs while stitching them together. We will be stitching the motifs together at each corner, see marked circles below.
4. Thread your sewing machine with the same thread in top and bobbin as you used for the embroidery. Set the machine to zigzag. The zigzag should not be wider than 1/8". Zigzag two motifs together at each corner. Make sure you go back and forth using the zigzag stitch at least two times.
5. Join three rows of three motifs together.
.
6. Next, join each of the rows together.
7. And you have a lace doily.
9. Now you can wash out the stabilizer and let dry. If you are like me and like laces to be soft, then soak for a couple of hours in warm water(changing water every now and then).
| 10. And you have a beautiful doily! You can also use the doily as a centerpiece by adding more motifs to it. You can also use the motifs to make a long lace border.
