Let’s have a survey-Machine Embroidery
Friends, here is a survey. Would appreciate replies. Thanks.
1. Question #1: An embroidery friend emails you about a new free embroidery design. Eagerly you click on the link provided. The design is gorgeous. You download the design and bookmark the site. Unzipping the download file to check that you have the design, you find it also has a text file. Do you open the text file to read it or do not open and delete it?
2.Question #2: You are looking for a particular design and ask where you might find it on several embroidery groups. Later that day, you receive several emails privately with an attachment. The attachment contains the particular design you were searching. Do you download it to your computer and send a thank you email to the senders?
3. Question #3: Your friend asks you to swap a design file in return for a design file she has. Do you oblige?
4. Question #4: You have always admired a certain digitizer’s work. A friend gives you a disk (unlabeled or home made) of designs from that particular digitizer for your birthday. You are flattered. Do you accept the disk?
5. Question #5: Your sister purchases a brand new machine which comes with several CDs of designs. Being nice, she gives you a few of the CDs that came with her machine without opening the packages. Do you accept?
6. Question #6: Browsing the Internet, you are led to Ebay auctions and see an auction for a particular set of designs that you are looking for. The price is half that what your local dealer sells for. Do you immediately purchase the designs?
7. Question #7: You are at your dealer browsing the various design catalogs. The dealer lets you know that he has a special deal during the week. You can pick and choose your own selections to create a personalized CD of designs. Taking your choices, he burns it to a CD (which may or may not be labeled). Do you purchase it?

1. A text file with any design purchased or downloaded always has specific information which gives the purchaser/downloader the info regarding where the design came from, the usage of the design and color etc particulars. Bookmarking a website is fine but would you remember five months later when stitching out the design that you downloaded it from a specific site. It is always a good idea to save the text file alongside the design. Generally text files are not large so not a problem about taking up space on your computer.
2. A lot of things are tempting in life but that is a personal choice whether to download or not. However by downloading you not only helped those sending the designs in being guilty (unless they are the owners of the design) but you yourself have become part and parcel of an illegality-distribution. Distribution requires two parties-the sender and the receiver.
3. This is how many sharing groups are formed. It generally starts with one and goes on to include a friend and a friend of a friend and so on. Before too long you have set up and are part of an IP infringement group.
4. If your friend purchased online as a birthday gift, she should ask the designer to email directly to you or purchase the cd directly from the designer to mail to you. Burning the cd herself she has infringed someone’s distribution of IP.
5.A design cd still in original packaging with no proof of being opened is perfectly fine to give as a gift as no one really owns the disk until they open it.
6. If your dealer is selling the disk at $100 and the ebay auction is selling for $50,it would be wise to question the seller why. If you do not know the actual price of the disk and think the ebay auction price is great, still question the seller. Internet has opened up a vast arena and one really cannot say the person on the other end is what they say they are. It is your right to question and ask questions and the seller have an obligation to answer to your satisfaction.
7. Dealers who sell designs from catalogs have been given the authority to sell by the said company. In other words they are reps and can definitely burn the designs of your choice onto a cd in front of you. If not having any markings on a cd bother you, please let the dealer know.
