USPS Property

I had a bit of an interesting day today. For some time now I have been busy planning an apron for a swap on one of my favorite Internet groups. I had drawn out the sketch for how I wanted the apron to be and the design for it. Everything went well except it took me a long while to make it. The nature of the design was such that I needed to use water soluble stabilizer so that meant washing the pieces as I worked along. Last night I finally finished the apron, ironed and starched it and hung it up to admire. The only thing that I was going to attach to it today was the pocket which also had the same design as the rest of the apron. The pocket was not completely dry so I decided that can be today’s work.

Well, today rolled around and I wrapped the apron and packaged it to take to the Post Office. Very pleased with myself that I had created something from special fabrics for my secret swapper I decided to take a little break from my work and rest. Half an  hour later I went back to my work room  and what do I see on the ironing board….the pocket. Next to it, was the card that I had written out. I dashed out of the house, drove like crazy to the Post office and ran inside yelling I need my package back. The Post Master pointed out the window to the USPS truck rolling out of the parking lot. I said nothing but ran outside, got in my car and drove down front street knowing I could overtake the truck at the four way stop. I got to the stop seconds before the truck came to the stop so I pulled out in the middle of the intersection and taking my receipt ran to the driver of the truck. I think the man was a bit panicked seeing this crazed woman parking the car in front of his truck and running out yelling “I need my package”. I showed him the receipt and told him I really really want the package. “It is US Government’s property”, he said and kept shaking his head. Well, that might be true but I want that package, I need to finish the apron. There was no winning with the man.

It was indeed a comical scene now that I think about it and I’m sure I’ll probably never live this one down…something to talk about at the coffee shop for those early birds, but oh well. I’ll post the pictures in a few days of it as it is a secret swap and I do not want to give myself away to my secret friend. Meanwhile, an interesting lesson learned. How easy it is for any of us to forget some very small things.
