Vintage look reticule-ME project
Ever since I created the vintage look evening reticule with freestanding laces, I
had to try out other options as this method had me quite excited. Now that I knew I had a perfect topper for the purse through which I had a pre-made entredeux for my drawstrings, I could really go to town by changing the body of the purse. This time I decided to use some of the Dupioni silks in creating a vintage look patchwork reticule. I chose the designs from the Victorian Patchwork 5×7 collection which was the perfect height for the body of the purse. I stitched out four of the rectangle designs. Instead of using different threads I decided to use a metallic dark bronze thread by Madeira. What a rich looking thread I must say. It stitches like a dream on the embroidery machine however, sewing with it is another thing. Perhaps it was the tension on my Bernina or what but I never had so many breaks. I used the Tamour Lace III long crochet band at the top of the reticule using the metallic bronze thread. I then joined all four blocks using a zigzag stitch with each block butted against each other. The four blocks were then attached to the crochet lace band with another zigzag stitched. The bag is lined with silk as well with a stipple quilted round bottom. The whole project took me about a day and I know my dd will be after this one for sure. I am going to add some beads and other vintage look trinkets on it but even if I didn’t the reticule is absolutely stunning. I do want to find some cording instead of using ribbon for the drawstring though but that means a trip to the stores so that will have to wait a while. The options are endless using this type of pattern. One could use embroidery designs, make panels so instead of having a round bag, one could have a sort of a oblong bag. I am sure you can tell that I am sold on this bag. Have not tried larger sizes yet but will do that sometime later.

Looks great- reminds me of crazy quilt designs-which i like to do on the
machine-
Now I know what to make with my set of Victorian blocks; I have three granddaughters who are 17, 17 and 20 and they all love handbags. Wouldn’t this make a great Christmas present for them? I think I would do the band in a crochet type thread to avoid the breakage problems that you had with the metallic (although the final outcome is lovely).
Kathleen, thank you so much for your comment. As a quilter I know it is easier to do these blocks on the sewing machine but there are many friends who are not quilters hence my introduction in creating something for them which always will line up perfectly and also give the effect of quilting with crazy patches. Thanks again, Hugs, Sadia
Chere, thanks again for your comment. Yes, teens love bags and the reticule is a perfect gift…actually I had that in mind for dd and dgd for Christmas as well….shhh, hope they do not read the blog, LOL. Actually any poly thread is perfect for the fsl laces. The only problem I had with metallic thread was on the sewing machine. It worked like a charm on the embroidery machine. My guess is it is the tension setting on the bernina that perhaps was not set right and I was in a hurry so not sure. However, rather than using metallics, I am at the moment stitching out another one with the Floriani threads which have such a nice sheen. Do send me pictures of your purses, I would love to see them. Hugs, Sadia
